Frequently Asked Questions

We love hearing from our community of wine lovers. Below you'll find answers to the most common questions about Il Piccolo Sommelier, our hand-blown glass aerator, and how to get the most out of every pour.

What makes Il Piccolo Sommelier different from other wine aerators?

Our aerator is crafted from hand-blown glass, not plastic, giving it a refined look and feel that belongs on any table. It's protected by an international patent because the aeration technology is truly one of a kind. Independent lab tests confirm that Il Piccolo Sommelier delivers 50% more dissolved oxygen per aeration than some competing aerators, which means richer aromas and softer tannins in every glass.

How does wine aeration actually work?

Aeration introduces oxygen to your wine, which softens tannins and releases complex aromas that are often locked away in a freshly opened bottle. With Il Piccolo Sommelier, this process takes just 45 seconds for a flawless 6 oz pour, so there's no need to wait 30 minutes or more with a traditional decanter.

Can I use this on white wine?

Absolutely. While red wines benefit most noticeably from aeration, many white wines (especially fuller-bodied varieties like Chardonnay, Viognier, and white Burgundy) open up beautifully with a quick pass through the aerator. We recommend experimenting with your favorite whites to taste the difference for yourself.

Is this dishwasher safe?

No. Because Il Piccolo Sommelier is made from delicate hand-blown glass, we recommend hand washing only. Do not use soap! Rinse the aerator with warm water immediately after each use. Use the drying stand to let air dry.

What is the small cork on the end of the chain?

That's our mini cork, and it's designed to fit smaller or narrower bottle openings that the standard cork may not seal properly. Simply swap it in whenever you're working with a half bottle, a slim-necked bottle, or any opening where the standard cork feels too large. It's included with every Full Set so you're always prepared.

The cork won't go all the way down into the wine bottle. What should I do?

This usually means the bottle has a wider-than-average opening. Make sure you're using the standard cork (the larger of the two included). Press it in gently with a slight twist; it should sit snugly without needing to be forced all the way down. If the standard cork still feels loose, the bottle's neck may be unusually wide. In that case, reach out to our team and we'll help you find a solution.

What if I misplace or break my cork and/or drying stand?

We understand that accidents happen. Replacement corks and drying stands are available through our website. Contact our customer service team directly at info@ilpiccolosommelier.com, and we'll get the right parts to you quickly so you can keep enjoying your aerator.

What's included in the Il Piccolo Sommelier Full Set?

The full set includes the hand-blown glass aerator, a drying stand, and both the standard and mini corks. We also offer a Carrying Case separately for $19.99, perfect for bringing your aerator to dinner parties, tastings, or travel.

Is Il Piccolo Sommelier a good gift for wine lovers?
